An Open Innovation Platform for Citizen Science and the SDGs in BARMM and Beyond
A Program of the Asian School of Governance
The Bangsa CoDev Studio is a frontier program of the Asian School of Governance (ASG) that mobilizes citizen science, community innovation, and cross-sector co-creation to advance the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) and other regions in the Philippines.
Designed as a citizen-powered SDG studio, it invites students, researchers, local government units (LGUs), civil society, and grassroots communities to co-develop solutions to urgent public challenges using open data, low-cost technology, and community-led inquiry.
A regenerative, inclusive, and innovation-driven society where citizens are active co-creators of public value, and where science, data, and local knowledge converge to solve real-world problems across the SDGs.
1. Citizen Science for SDGs
Train and equip citizens with tools to gather, interpret, and visualize data related to climate resilience, public health, food systems, water security, education, and more.
Partner with barangays, schools, and local institutions to map issues and track progress on the SDGs using open-source and AI-enabled tools.
2. Co-Design Sprints and Innovation Labs
Facilitate CoDev Sprints where multi-sectoral teams prototype solutions in response to local challenges.
Apply Problem-Driven Iterative Adaptation (PDIA) and design thinking to promote community ownership, experimentation, and scaling.
3. Open Learning and Knowledge Commons
Curate a public repository of tools, methods, datasets, and case stories emerging from community-led initiatives.
Build a learning network of SDG champions, researchers, technologists, and community innovators across the Philippines and Southeast Asia.
4. Youth and University Partnerships
Activate student governments, youth councils (SK), and STEM clubs as innovation teams.
Partner with schools and universities to embed citizen science and community innovation into research, capstones, and service learning.
The Bangsa CoDev Studio works in close coordination with ASG’s growing constellation of Social Labs, including:
Climate Action Labs
Blue Economy Lab
Financial Inclusion Lab
Health Systems Lab
Education Impact Lab
By collaborating with these sectoral and thematic labs, the Studio leverages interdisciplinary insights, shared methodologies, and field-based innovations to enrich citizen science efforts and ensure that local knowledge feeds directly into system-level transformation.
Together, these labs create an innovation ecosystem that enables rapid knowledge exchange, collaborative experimentation, and scalable impact across governance and development challenges.
Co-Creation: Solutions are developed with and by communities, not for them.
Modular & Scalable: Our toolkits and methods can be replicated, adapted, and localized.
AI-Enabled, People-Led: We use artificial intelligence to support—not replace—community wisdom and agency.
Decolonizing Knowledge: We center local ways of knowing and ensure equitable participation in innovation.
Barangay Leaders & LGUs: Host a citizen science project in your community.
Educators & Researchers: Collaborate on open science and co-creation initiatives.
Students & Youth: Join our SDG Innovation Teams and bring your creativity to real-world problems.
Funders & Allies: Partner with us to scale citizen-led innovation for the SDGs.
